Copenhagen 2019 - Day 3

Image
Sunday Copenhagen is a beautiful city but our guide map suggested we headed slightly out of the centre to see the "real Copenhagen". Unfortunately this is much like any other suburb and we were happy to make our way back to the tourist trail and grab an ice cream on the harbour front. Nyhaven is  the biggest tourist trap and all though very colourful it is spoilt by it's popularity. We couldn't leave Copenhagen without doing a boat trip! Hey Captain were highly recommended and it was excellent. Viktor was our Captain for the tour and it was just 9 passengers - 10 friends together in a boat sharing a beer and a chat. We learned that the King is either named Frederic or Christian and that the king has to have the highest point in the city. The Royal palace was damaged by fire twice so they moved out and left it to the politicians- Borgen. The canals were built by the Dutch which is why it is reminiscent of Amsterdam and the Islands are man made from...

Copenhagen 2019 - Day 2

Day 2 Saturday Too late to blog when we got back last night. The sun is shining in Copenhagen today so we resume our walking tour of the city. We just caught the changing of the guard at the royal palace but this wasn't a grand affair, the sentries were relieved of their duties and marched back to the barracks. Sometimes geocaching tells us something interesting that the guidebooks miss out. Today we saw Valkyries Spear pointing towards her "sister " who we found much later in the day, the 16th century houses that were built for Naval workers and a pretty shopping arcade. Our route also took us to the immaculate Kings Park, quiet residential streets to designer shops in the High St. It was interesting to visit the parliament building -Borgen which is protected by a series of concrete balls, an effective but aesthetically pleasing deterrent. There were weddings in City Hall and a statue to Hans Christian Anderson, Copenhagen's most...

Copenhagen 2019 - Day 1

Friday. Day 2 of retirement brings us to Copenhagen. We caught the metro from the airport to the city centre and strolled down the historic Nyhaven to our hotel. A quick pitstop and we headed off towards the harbour towards the Little Mermaid statue.  We ended up being waylaid at a bar on the waterfront and had a couple of beers.  Our seats were so good we decided to linger and stay for dinner! Eventually  we had to leave and continue our journey to the iconic statue before making our way back to the hotel. Loving retirement so far.
