Copenhagen 2019 - Day 3
Sunday
Copenhagen is a beautiful city but our guide map suggested we headed slightly out of the centre to see the "real Copenhagen". Unfortunately this is much like any other suburb and we were happy to make our way back to the tourist trail and grab an ice cream on the harbour front.
Nyhaven is the biggest tourist trap and all though very colourful it is spoilt by it's popularity.
We couldn't leave Copenhagen without doing a boat trip! Hey Captain were highly recommended and it was excellent.
Viktor was our Captain for the tour and it was just 9 passengers - 10 friends together in a boat sharing a beer and a chat.
We learned that the King is either named Frederic or Christian and that the king has to have the highest point in the city. The Royal palace was damaged by fire twice so they moved out and left it to the politicians- Borgen.
The canals were built by the Dutch which is why it is reminiscent of Amsterdam and the Islands are man made from reclaimed land and waste landfill.
The most expensive apartment in Copenhagen is in a former torpedo shed and the submarine on display broke down on active service enroute to the Gulf War. The Frigate moored in the Harbour is locally called the "Ooopsy Daisy" as in 1982 it was involved in a harpoon missile misfire incident but is now a museum.
The Opera House wins no fans for it's beauty so in order to curb criticism the most expensive opera house in the world was paid for by the Maersk Shipping company.
It is also the venue for the Red Bull cliff diving championships as Denmark has no Cliffs!!
Following our boat trip we just had time for lunch and a beer on the harbour side before collecting our luggage and taking the Metro to the airport.
What a fantastic way to start retirement.
