Australia 2020 - Day 6 - Twelve Apostles and the Otway Loop

Tuesday

Our hire car gave us the freedom to explore the Otway peninsula today. The road climbed steeply from sea level into the hills and the Great Otway National Park which at times seemed like a jungle but is actually ancient temperate rainforest, the area has the highest rainfall in the state - which means there are waterfalls which flow all year round.

We walked to Triplet Falls a small cascade surrounded by ancient forest and tree ferns.

The roads were twisty and undulating but very quiet, a pleasure to drive.

After lunch we continues along the Great Ocean Rd (which was inland)! to the iconic Twelve Apostles, limestone sea stacks that are being carved and eroded by the wind and sea, indeed there are no longer 12 of them. It is a fantastic sight, which attracts 2 million visitors a year the third highest number in Australia after Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef.

Closing the loop back to Apollo bay we drove to Cape Otway, the second most Southerly point on mainland Australia. There is a lighthouse here and this stretch of coastline is known as the shipwreck coast. The Bass Strait runs between the mainland and Tasmania.

Laura and Nathan whom we met in the pitlane of Albert Park on Sunday had recommended we book a table at Chris's restaurant while we were in Apollo Bay, it is an award winning establishment serving Mediterranean food with a Greek theme. The building is perched high above Beacon Point with panoramic views across the bay to the harbour.

The food and wine were excellent, very glad we came here
