Australia 2020 - Day 1 - Kuala Lumpur
KL
Thursday
Not strictly speaking an Aussie adventure but a 36 hour stopover en route. Colin has been teasing me for months about my pronunciation of Kuala Lumpur but actually the locals just call it KL!
We arrived at our city centre hotel (the Shangri La) around 9:00am just over 24 hours since we left Uxbridge in the UK (there is an eight hour forward time shift) and neither of us had a wink of sleep but somehow after a shower adrenaline kicks in and we go exploring.
KL is dominated by skyscrapers and two have observation decks open to the public. The KL telecommunications tower is the elder statesman but only by a few years and closest to our hotel but we have pre-booked a Petronas Tower tour this evening so we stayed at ground level for the communications tower.
The standard of driving especially scooters is appalling and you take your life into your hands crossing the road, so glad we don't have a hire car.
A walk through Chinatown is always fascinating but especially at New Year but after a wander through the food hall of the market we decided to play it safe and have McDonald's for lunch! ( I know we should savour the experience but the hygiene standards were so bad in 33 degree heat).
An hour by the pool with a beer was just what we needed to invigorate us for our evening tour but we could have done without the tropical downpour with thunder and lightening. Fortunately the entrance to the Petronas Towers is inside a shopping mall so we escaped the worst of it.
The Petronas Towers were the tallest in the world for 4 years when they were built and retain the title of the tallest twin towers.
