WHW 2019 - T Minus 2

Saturday

We are on our way!

We decided to break our journey to Scotland and the start of the West Highland Way in the Lakes. Our hotel is just outside Penrith and we headed for Pooley Bridge which is situated at the Northern most point of Ullswater for lunch. The first thing we encountered was the temporary bridge that was constructed in four months after the 17th century original stone bridge was washed away by storm Desmond in 2015. ( This is due to be replaced by a permanent structure in the winter months 2019/20).

Whilst the south of England was basking in Mediterranean temperatures the North was a chilly 14 degrees and very overcast so we tested out our walking kit with a five mile walk to Heughscar Hill which was originally a Roman Rd!

We have brought along our mascot - Winnie the Explorer on our adventure - he is 21 years old and hails from the Animal Kingdom Florida. ( Look out for him along the way)

We all managed to stay dry and got some training in for the 96 miles to come in Scotland. there were some fine views of Ullswater Lake.

All aboard at the steamer pier, the last boat of the day has just left.

We made the most of a very pleasant evening with an after dinner stroll around the village of Stainton.
