California 2017 - Day 5 - Monterey to Big Sur, Carmel and 17 Mile Drive

Wednesday

Route

We had thunder and heavy rain during the night and the forecast wasn't good more rain forecast for today but although overcast it was dry when we set off on a road trip along Highway 1, The Pacific Coast Rd.

There were some great views of the coastline and plenty of places to pull in and take photos, one of the most iconic being Bixby Bridge, one of the highest single span bridges in the world and made of concrete.

We stopped for coffee and a muffin here and we were joined by some very cheeky squirrels.

The road is closed after the Big Sur Station due to a huge landslip so like everyone else we turned around and made the return journey - actually no hardship as we saw things from the opposite perspective.

On our way into Carmel we drove passed an historic Tor House once owned by a renowned American poet and along Scenic Drive where we pulled over to admire the view and spotted a whale blowing a spout, an awesome sight!

Carmel is a very affluent town with art galleries and restaurants on every street corner. We picked up some very good sandwiched from an Italian deli and ate them in the peaceful garden of the church.
There was also a lovely sculpture of an old couple on a bench called "Happy Ever After", I hope we get to be like that!

At Carmel beach we both ended up having an impromptu paddle and getting wet legs (and a dead phone) when our signature heart in the sand got washed away in the surf!

Our return journey to Monterey was via the 17 Mile Drive Rd with stops at Pebble Beach golf club where the 18th hole over looks the bay and to the 250 year old Lone Cypress Tree, one of the most photographed trees.

Actually the weather hasn't been as bad as predicted and although not scorching we have had some  sunny spells and a great day.
