NC500 2017 - Day 1 - Halesowen to Melrose Scotland
Saturday 1st July 2017
Halesowen to Melrose Scotland
Route
We are very excited and wake up early so we are on the road by 07.15. We are heading for Scotland!
We eat our picnic lunch in an idyllic but windy spot at Percy's Cross in Otterburn, a memorial to a bloody 14th century battle between the English and the Scots. We are in border country - a middle age No Man's land.
The border is conveniently marked with rocks and flags and even a cavalry reenactment so we stop for obligatory photo's.
We see three of the four Border abbey ruins, Jedburgh - a beautiful and eerie skeleton abbey remains, Melrose which is also a pretty town where we sampled our first Scottish ice cream and Dryburgh next door to our hotel.
We took a pleasant afternoon stroll from our hotel to the nearby suspension bridge across the River Tweed and along some of St Cuthbert's Way.
After an excellent dinner we walked to the giant statue of William Wallace aka Braveheart.
